How to Play Phonics Bug

Phonics Bug helps children practise one phonics pattern at a time. Short u words: listen for the u in bug.

What is Phonics Bug?

A picture appears with empty letter boxes. Tap the letters in order to spell the word. Wrong letters shake and the game waits for the right one. Every third word is a reading round: pick the word that matches the picture.

How to play Phonics Bug

Tap letter tiles. Tap Hear it to listen to the word again.

Step by step

1. Look at the picture and say what it is.
2. Press Hear it if you are not sure.
3. Tap the first sound's letter, then the next, until the word is complete.
4. In reading rounds, choose the word that matches the picture.
5. Earn a star for each word you get right first time.

Strategy tips to play better

• Say the word slowly and stretch each sound before tapping.
• Listen for the focus sound: short u words.
• Point to each letter as you sound it out.
• Replay the game to practise all the words.
